| The Uganda
Agricultural Productivity Enhancement Program
(APEP) is a five-year USAID-funded activity that commenced
implementation in November 2003. APEP aims to expand
rural economic opportunities and increase household
income
in the agricultural sector by increasing food and cash
crop
productivity and marketing.
The program builds on sector successes with added emphasis
on creating economies of scale that catalyze transformation
of
agriculture from low input/low output, subsistence within
the targeted commodities, APEP addresses production-to-market
transactions, improvements in input distribution, and
the development of competitive agricultural and rural
enterprises. This includes working with business and
industry leaders to design corporate structures to reach
producers and work with producers to respond and organize
themselves. APEP also works with producer organizations
to develop linkages, management systems, and revenue
streams. Specifically, APEP focuses on the following
activities:
- Technology generation, including agricultural research
- Technology transfer, through farmer field demonstrations
- Post-harvest handling
- Producer organization strengthening
- Private sector input supply
- Training
- Market development and market intelligence
- Agricultural investment promotion
- Agricultural finance
- Agro-processing
- Policy advocacy
- Biotechnology and biosafety
