Sunflower: | to commodities main page

Background

Sunflower has been produced for over a decade in Uganda and serves as a basic raw material in the oilseed processing sector as well as an excellent rotational crop for maize and beans.  The crop is traditionally grown using open pollinated varieties that produce yields of 400 kg an acre.

APEP Interventions

In order to increase sunflower yields and encourage expanded production, APEP in collaboration with Mukwano Agro Projects, a private sector partner, is promoting a hybrid variety of sunflower.  Using the APEP demonstration site model, over 1,200 sites have been established to promote the PANNAR sunflower hybrid. Low input production on the sites includes the use of appropriate agronomic practices and hybrid seed, which produces yields of 700 kg per acre.  High input production, which combines the low input techniques with herbicide and fertilizer application yields 1,200 kg per acre.

As a result of promotion through demonstration plots and availability of hybrid seed to farmers, Mukwano was able to purchase over 57 tons of hybrid sunflower as of September of 2004. Given the positive reaction from farmers significant increases in production are anticipated for upcoming seasons.
